For me, every day is Autism. Autism acceptance is what I need. I may not be able to communicate what I need, so my behavior is my way of communicating. Don’t reprimand me or punish me, help me. Be understanding that I may not have the skills to tell you what I need, but that I need you to use your skills to help understand what I need. When I learn how to communicate better, I have less behaviors. But when I am frustrated, I will have more challenging behaviors. Accept me, help me, advocate for me.
What we eat can have a positive or negative effect on our mood and overall health. Parents and caregivers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, such as autism, may need to pay close attention to the child’s diet since some research suggests a link between food and autism symptoms.
We live in an age of abbreviations. You may have seen a PCM to discuss a learner’s DD or ASD diagnosis. They may have suggested ABA to assist in strengthening their VB by using DTT, PRT, or NET. You could almost LOL but shrug it off because YOLO and would hate to admit that you have no idea what they are referring to.
This Mother's Day, please rejoice in knowing how appreciated you are. None of us is perfect, and mistakes are certainly made, but that's not the point. Rest in knowing how relentless you've been as a parent. Rest in knowing in that you've inspired many of us to reach a bit higher, and to dig a bit deeper.
